Tremors medical cannabis treatment

Tremors can happen normally, for example, if you’ve consumed too much caffeine, or if you’re feeling stressed or angry or emotional: but tremors can also be a symptom of conditions like multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and a neurological condition called essential tremor. Medications can be prescribed to reduce shaking or trembling in these cases, but unfortunately these are not always effective for everyone. Recently, medical cannabis has emerged as a potential option for those not responding to conventional approaches, and cannabis-based tremor treatment plans are available for eligible patients at Releaf.

A word from our specialist

“Neurological conditions are many and varied in how they can affect us. The more recognised conditions that are treatable with medical cannabis include epilepsy, where CBD mimics the action of the many anti-epileptic drugs; and multiple sclerosis, which the NHS can prescribe Sativex for. Medical Cannabis offers greater flexibility in the delivery of cannabinoid therapy for these conditions and hope in other areas of neurology, such as in neurodegenerative conditions and motor disorders.“

How cannabis may help ease Parkinson’s disease

Every single hour, two people in the UK are diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease (PD), the world’s fastest growing neurological condition that currently has no cure. With an estimated 8.5 million people facing this incurable diagnosis across the world, increasing numbers of Parkinson’s patients are turning to medicinal cannabis to help potentially manage tremors and rigidity, relieve the symptoms of anxiety that can go hand in hand with the diagnosis, and improve their sleep quality.

The Medical Benefits of THC explained

THC, or delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol, is the most prominent cannabinoid in most cannabis sativa L. strains, and the compound that produces the psychoactive, intoxicating effects associated with cannabis. But, along with the recreational effects of THC, research is showing that it offers a range of potential therapeutic, wellness, and medicinal benefits for those suffering from a surprisingly wide extent of conditions.

Are patients with tremors eligible for medical cannabis treatments in the UK?

Recently, in the UK, medical cannabis has emerged as a new potential treatment option to aid symptom management, for those who have not been responding to traditional treatments. While many patients with Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis report they have used cannabis therapeutically effectively to manage their tremors, unfortunately, clinical investigation in this area is limited.

But, recent evidence does suggest for patients with tremors, medical cannabis may be able to assist because of the effects its chemical compounds can have when they enter the bloodstream. In 2021, scientists administered mice with a synthetic cannabinoid to find out more. They found this cannabinoid reduced essential tremors by activating astrocyte cells, which support the brain and spinal cord, and may help to calm the conflicting messages given by motor neurons - which causes tremors.

However, gold standard, randomised placebo controlled trials involving humans in this area have remained inconclusive, and they are yet to mirror the strong anecdotal findings and data evidenced in patient surveys that indicate cannabis-based products may be able to assist in tremor management.

So, for now, it is important that medical cannabis treatment plans are overseen by qualified healthcare professionals like those that work for Releaf to ensure safety and efficacy. At Releaf medical cannabis treatment plans are tailored to the individual, so each patient can create their own bespoke plan to treat the symptoms that affect their lives the most.

If you have been struggling with conventional tremor treatments, cannabis-based treatment plans may be considered an appropriate option for you, fill out our eligibility checker to find out more.
